Workshop Abstract:

Stories can do more than inform—they can foster empathy, challenge prejudice, preserve lived experiences, and inspire action. Behind every human rights issue are individuals, families, and communities whose voices deserve to be heard with dignity, accuracy, and respect.

On 17 – 18 October 2026, the School of Social Sciences, Universiti Sains Malaysia, together with Pusat Sejarah Rakyat organised the Storytelling for Human Rights Workshop with the sponsorship of the Taiwan Foundation for Democracy. Throughout the workshop in Penang hosted by ALIRAN, we collectively explore diverse narration of human rights issues from activists, scholars and practitioners.

Through in-depth discussions, case studies, practical exercises, and peer feedback, participants learnt how to develop compelling, ethical, and impactful stories that illuminate human rights issues while respecting the rights and dignity of those whose stories are being told.
